Social Stratification and Cultural Concepts
Rural Sociology & Educational Psychology · B.Sc. Agriculture
Read a concept in either language → explain it in your own words → apply the village example → answer the self-check without looking at the key.
Stratification: meaning and bases /
Social stratification is the patterned ranking of social positions or categories with unequal access to resources, opportunities, prestige and power. It is more than simple difference: different crop preferences are differences, but unequal influence in village decisions may reflect stratification. Bases can include wealth, occupation, education, landholding, inherited status and political power. Status is a social position; role means the expectations associated with that position.
Forms, functions and consequences /
Textbooks discuss caste, class, estate and slavery as historical forms; caste and class are central to this course. Stratification structures expectations and the allocation of rewards and influence. Some functional explanations see incentives for performing roles, but this does not prove that existing inequalities are necessary or fair. Restricted mobility, exclusion, unequal voice and blocked access to education or resources are important consequences. Describe the system analytically rather than approving discrimination.
Class and caste /
Class is generally related to socio-economic position such as income, occupation, education and assets; its boundaries are relatively open and mobility can occur. Caste is historically associated with birth-based membership, ranked status, endogamy and restrictions on social interaction. These are analytical contrasts, not a claim that either system works identically everywhere today. Caste and class can intersect. Neither social category indicates an individual’s ability, worth or entitlement to extension services.
Culture: meaning and characteristics /
Culture is the learned and shared pattern of knowledge, beliefs, values, practices and symbols through which people live. It is transmitted, adaptive and changing, not biologically inherited in the same way as physical traits. Material culture includes tools and physical objects; non-material culture includes values, language, norms and beliefs. A smartphone is material; expectations about who may use it concern non-material culture. The two influence each other.
Six cultural terms /
Custom: a socially accepted practice repeated over time. Folkway: an everyday convention with relatively mild sanctions, such as a locally accepted greeting. More: a norm with strong moral importance, such as honesty in common accounts. Taboo: a strongly prohibited act within a cultural setting. Ritual: a prescribed sequence of actions for an occasion. Tradition: a practice or belief passed between generations. A habit belongs to an individual; a custom is socially shared. Meanings can overlap and examples vary by context.
Application in extension /
Map who attends, speaks, owns resources and receives benefits. Use accessible venues and transparent selection rather than only approaching powerful households. Understand language, calendars, food preferences and local practices by asking people, not assuming them from caste or religion. Explain a new practice in familiar terms, while testing its technical suitability and respecting dignity. Cultural sensitivity does not require accepting exclusion or unsafe practices.
Apply it: a village situation /
A group buys a shared grading machine, but only landowners attend its planning meeting. Identify the stratification issue, then propose open invitations, suitable timing and a recorded allocation rule. Separately identify the machine as material culture and the rule as non-material culture.
Your task / आपका कार्य: Name the concept, identify evidence in the situation and suggest one justified extension action.
