Identify supplied crop/seed specimens and read fertilizer/pesticide labels. Use verified reference specimens and photographs. Do not taste, smell closely or handle unknown chemicals; appearance alone is insufficient for fertilizer or pesticide identification. Keep seed and chemical teaching samples clearly separated.

Record common/scientific name, family, use, growth habit and diagnostic characters. Seed characters include size, shape, colour, surface, hilum and embryo position when visible. Compare similar cereals or pulses using more than colour. Mark tentative identifications for instructor verification.

Fertilizer labels give nutrient grade and basis, such as N–P2O5–K2O, not necessarily elemental N–P–K. Pesticide identification uses active ingredient, formulation, crop/use registration, hazard information and expiry, not trade name alone. A formulation code describes product type; it is not a universal application rate.
