Indian Rural Society: Characteristics and Rural–Urban Relations
Rural Sociology & Educational Psychology · B.Sc. Agriculture
Read a concept in either language → explain it in your own words → apply the village example → answer the self-check without looking at the key.
What is society? /
A society is a relatively enduring network of social relationships, shared expectations and organised activities. Rural society refers to these relationships in rural settings. A village is a settlement; rural society is the social life within and across such settlements. Administrative boundaries alone do not describe all the economic and social connections of its residents.
Important characteristics /
Common rural features include connections with agriculture and natural resources, seasonal work, family and neighbourhood ties, local traditions, community organisations and local leadership. These are tendencies, not universal rules. Rural households differ by occupation, land access, gender, income, education and migration experience. Rural economies also include services, wage work and non-farm enterprises; villages are not necessarily isolated or self-sufficient.
Rural and urban comparison /
Compare them by population density, dominant livelihoods, settlement pattern, personal relationships, division of labour, mobility and access to services. Rural settings often have lower density and stronger agriculture links; urban settings often have higher density and more specialised non-farm work. Both can contain close personal groups and formal organisations. These dimensions form a continuum, so avoid absolute statements such as every villager knows everyone or every urban relationship is impersonal.
Interdependence and extension /
Villages supply agricultural products, labour and other services to towns. Towns provide markets, processing, finance, education, health services and inputs. Migration, transport and digital communication link both directions. Extension must consider these flows: a production recommendation can fail when transport or market access is missing. Plan for different groups within a village rather than treating it as one uniform client.
Apply it: a village situation /
A vegetable grower near a town sells through an urban trader, buys seed from a town shop and receives labour from a nearby village. Identify three rural–urban linkages and ask which linkage could interrupt the value chain. This turns a comparison question into an explanation of interdependence.
Your task / आपका कार्य: Name the concept, identify evidence in the situation and suggest one justified extension action.
