Compare dry/moist-soil ploughing with wet-soil puddling in the instructor’s demonstration. Ploughing loosens/cuts soil; puddling works saturated soil to reduce permeability in specific transplanted-rice systems. Puddling is not required for every rice system or every crop.

Before work record soil condition, residue cover and the operation’s objective. Watch a trained operator set depth, alignment and passes. After work assess furrow/clod condition for ploughing and surface uniformity/soil consistency for puddling. Record actual observations; do not prescribe a universal number of passes.
