Study tools used between established crop rows for shallow weed management, soil loosening or earthing up. Intertillage is after establishment; preparatory tillage precedes sowing. Use row spacing and crop stage to judge clearance and working depth.

Hand hoes, wheel hoes, sweeps, blade weeders and suitable inter-row cultivators differ in cutting, uprooting and soil movement. Ridgers can move soil toward rows where appropriate. Identify blades, tines, wheels, handles and depth adjustments. Not every implement works safely in narrow rows or dense canopies.

Observe untreated and worked strips if the instructor provides them. Record weed stage, soil moisture, crop clearance, working width and visible crop injury. Weeds within the crop row may remain after inter-row treatment. Moist soil can make uprooted weeds reroot; overly wet working can smear and compact soil.
